2001-2004 Syrah wines from the West Coast (August 15, 2006 Issue)

WineBlueBook (formerly QPRwines) is a wine buying guide that compares wine ratings and price to determine value.

In this issue you will find 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 Syrah wines from the West Coast.

When combining all the vintages by score and price, the 2002 vintage has 14 "Great Value" wines, the 2003 has 13 and the 2001 vintage has six. Although there are only 24 wines from the 2004 vintage, five of the 24 wines (21%) are "Great Values". Therefore the vintage will be one to watch as more wines are released and reviewed by the critics.

When comparing wines scoring 90 points or more, 37% of the 2003 vintage wines average over 90 points while the 2002 vintage has 20% and the 2001 vintage has 19%. In terms of price, all three vintages are close with an average price of $36 for the 2003 vintage, $34 for the 2002 and the 2001 vintage averages $42 for a 90 point wine.

At the high end the 2004 Behrens & Hitchcock, Syrah Mendocino Alder Springs Vineyard Homage To Ed Oliveira averages 94 points and at $71 it is 43% of the average $165 price for a similar scoring wine earning a "Great Value" moniker. At the same score and one dollar more, the 2004 Pax Cellars, Syrah Sonoma Coast Griffin's Lair is also a "Great Value". At $32, the 2003 Fielding Hills, Syrah Columbia Valley averages 93 points and earns a 43% "Great Value" rating. Again, for the same score and a dollar more the 2003 Carlisle, Syrah Dry Creek Valley is also a "Great Value". For $23 the 2004 Syncline Wine Cellars, Syrah Columbia Valley Milbrandt Vineyards averages 91 points and earns a 50% "Great Value". At the value end of $10, the 2001 Columbia, Syrah Columbia Valley averages 89 and earns a 29% "Great Value" QPR.

These six wines and 639 more are included in this issue.
