2001-2003 Southern Red Rhone Issue (September 2006 Issue)

WineBlueBook (formerly QPRwines) is a wine buying guide that compares wine ratings and price to determine value.

In this issue you will find 2001, 2002 and 2003 Southern Rhone wines from France.

Only four wines from the 2002 vintage are included in this issue as the vintage was abysmal due to rain and flooding and consequently, the wine critics did not review most of the wines. Most of the wines they did review received poor scores and are not worth purchasing. As a reminder, for a wine to be included in WineBlueBook it must have two or more critic ratings and be available for sale in the United States.

When combining all the vintages by score and price, the 2003 vintage has 12 "Great Value" wines and the 2001 vintage has four. There are no "Great Values" for the 2002 vintage.

When comparing wines scoring 90 points or more, 58% of the 2003 vintage wines average 90 points or above while the 2001 vintage has 56%. In terms of price, the 2003 vintage averaged $31 while the 2001 vintage averaged $34 for a 90 point wine. Overall, 2003 is the vintage to buy.

At the high end the 2003 Clos des Papes, Châteauneuf-du-Pape averages 97 points and at $90 it is 28% of the average $325 price for a similar scoring wine earning a "Great Value" moniker. At $50 the 2003 Domaine Grand Veneur, Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée les Origines averages 95 points and is 41% the average price earning it a "Great Value" compared to similar scoring wines. At $22, the 2003 Domaine des Pesquiers, Gigondas averages 91 points and earns a 49% "Great Value" rating. At the value end of $9, the 2003 E. Guigal, Côtes-du-Rhône averages 87 and earns a 34% "Great Value" QPR.

These four wines and 275 more are included in this issue.
