1999-2001 Piedmont Red wines from Italy (July 2006 Issue)
WineBlueBook (formerly QPRwines) is a wine buying guide that compares wine ratings and price to determine value.
In this issue you will find 1999, 2000 and 2001 Red wines from the Piedmont region of Italy. Although the 2002 Piedmont wines are in market, because of bad weather, the vintage was not well received by the critics and therefore many wines were not scored. Best to avoid the vintage.
When combining all the vintages by score and price, the 2001 vintage has six "Great Value" wines while the 2000 vintage has five and the 1999 vintage has three.
When comparing wines scoring 90 points or more, 80% of the 2001 vintage wines average over 90 points while the 2000 vintage has 73% and the 1999 vintage has 70%. In terms of price, all three vintages are close with an average price of $48 for the 2001, $54 for the 2000 vintage while the 1999 averages $57 for a 90 point wine.
At the high end, the 2001 Domenico Clerico, Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra averages 95 points and at $82 it is 36% of the average $229 price for a similar scoring wine earning a "Great Value" moniker. At $30, the 2000 Boroli, Barolo Villero averages 93 points and earns a 47% "Great Value" rating. At the value end of $19 the 2001 Domenico Clerico, Dolcetto Langhe Visad́ averages 90 points and earns a 36% "Great Value" QPR.
These three wines and 483 more are included in this issue.
